Before the first quote

The clearer the brief, the more useful the conversation.

Start with what you want the space to do. Describe the rooms, the people using them and the parts of the current arrangement that do not work.

Keep a separate list of essentials and preferences. A contractor can discuss alternatives more clearly when those two lists are not mixed together.

Bring drawings, access information and a rough timing preference if you have them. A real project still needs site-specific assessment and a written scope.
